Watching the coming attractions for Henry VI, Part I reminded me very much of what is going on in the United States and Brazil right now. Violent people are attacking the system for no reason other than that anger and resentment is their identity. Rather than focusing on their own abilities (do they have any?) or desire to help others (which they don’t have), they attack those who are doing their best to make the world a better place.
Connecting literature to life is one of the reason I read so much and my friends would tell you that often, when I am explaining something about myself or my life, I will compare the experience to literature. So, I’m looking forward to this week’s reading and I love the phrase: The Hollow Crown.
It’s also making me think about Harry and William, about whom I’ve heard enough (their story doesn’t interest me very much). I was reading, though, this morning that William “ordered Harry to shave his beard for the wedding.”
This play illuminates the beginning of The War of the Roses, about which I know nothing, which is also called The Hundred Years War. How is it that people who have everything only make things worse for others rather than striving to make the world a better place? It’s appalling.
Anyway, Henry VI is considered one of Shakespeare’s weaker plays.
