I was talking to an old friend today because I just turned her on to a new daily puzzle: Minute Cryptic. My friend is an expert at these puzzles, but I am learning how to do them and the daily puzzle helps a lot. Don’t watch the video before trying to solve the puzzle first.
During our conversation, she told me that she doesn’t play NYTimes Connections until she reaches Genius level in the NYTimes Spelling Bee Game. Connections is a reward.
I was thinking about that conversation as I ran today because I’m not someone who does things for rewards (and, honestly, for the most part, I don’t think she is, either). I’m not competitive and I like to help others win more than I worry about myself.
Nevertheless, we all do things for a reason, whether it’s the reward or the doing itself.
During today’s run, I thought about why I’m doing this. The truth is, I like training. I like being on a path toward something. I have frequently compared my writing with my running, and it’s true: I like writing every day, just as I like to walk and run every day. They are my thing.
